Cocktail Recipes – a small selection

Cocktail recipes

An A to Z of some of the best and most enduring cocktails of all time.

Appletiniappletini

Or Apple Martini or (originally) the Adam’s Apple Martini – is meant to be a twist on the original dry martini. Vodka is used instead of gin (usually) with an apple liqueur or apple schnapps but sometimes just apple juice or cider. Finish with a little lemon juice and a slice of apple.

Bees Kneesbees Knees

A prohibition era classic among cocktail recipes – a concoction of illegal bath-tub gin mixed with enough lemon and honey to make it tasty.

Black RussianBlack-Russian

5 parts vodka to two parts coffee liqueur. In the UK the favoured liqueur is Benedictine but Kahlua is more correct and Tia Maria has also been used. Traditionally it’s just served on ice but many people like to dilute with a coke.

A vodka and tomato juice – usually with salt, cayenne and some Worcester sauce. Probably one of the most well-known cocktail recipes of all time.

Ramos Gin FizzRamos Gin Fizz

One of the more complicated cocktail recipes – a gin based cocktail with lemon and lime juice, syrup, orange flower water, cream, an egg white, and (sometimes) vanilla. It must be shaken very well without ice, and then again with it.

Rub a tall glass or julep cup with gently bruised leaves of mint. Add sugar dissolved in water (or syrup), then crushed ice and bourbon and stir. Garnish with another sprig of mint.

Whiskey Sourwhisky-sour

Bourbon or rye whiskey, are mixed with lemon juice and sugar with soda to taste.

Only the white Russian can contend with the Tequila Sunrise to be the king of hippy cocktails. In the The Big Lebowski the Dude drinks at least nine of these. The recipe is two parts vodka, one part kahlua, and one part cream (or full cream milk). Benedictine is sometimes preferred in the UK.
